What keeps you awake at night

2023

A moth between the darkness and my room,
a story about the moonlight on my desk.

Fluttering wings echo
the opened album from last night.

I, have seen you through
the eyes on your wings.
You, have seen it all—my most
unguarded emotions in my dreams.

I follow my nightly ritual to fall asleep.
Control my breath
Place my tongue behind the front teeth
Breathe out
Close my mouth

Breathe in
One, two, three, four…

The spells come out of my mouth,
linger around my lips, my nostrils,
and make their way back to my head.
A cycle, it is.

You kept beating the dust against that window.
At last, you uttered your last words
as if they were air: good-bye.

Hold your breath
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven…
Open your mouth

Exhale
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight…

I, stare at you
just as you, stared at the moon.

Moth & Myth_1.jpg
