The Black Ice project is a long-term documentation of remnants I encounter on the ground in different cities and neighborhoods throughout New York City. These still lifes function for me like “black ice,” a metaphor James Elkins uses in What Photography Is to describe images that force the eye to move between the signifier and the signified, between the photograph itself and the world it represents.

The images I make share similar qualities: their textures and visual noise compel the eye to wander across the surface, while their subjects hold delicate and intimate traces of human touch and presence. These traces can reveal a particular demographic or identity, or suggest fragments of small, personal dramas that have just unfolded within an otherwise ordinary daily setting. To me, each image becomes a little theater—a stage on which the remnants of what has happened remain, quietly revealing a story that has already passed.
